Cloud Cover Patterns

Share |

Weather conditions are a key consideration with all location shoots, and researching the climate is often one of the first tasks in selecting a shortlist of suitable locations.

Weather Patterns for Cloud Cover shows average cloud cover at a particular place for all hours of the day and night. This is based on observations that are made over a number of years at regular times during the day, typically at three-hourly intervals.

By interpolating this data it is possible to illustrate variations in cloud cover through the day and night. The following example for the airport in Los Angeles in the United States shows how much cloudier it is usually during the summer months in the morning than in the afternoon. This is due to the airport’s proximity to the Pacific Ocean where in the early morning cool moist air from the sea mixes with the warmer air from inland, producing low cloud.
